A Pleasant Surprise: Sziget 2017, Budapest

Hello Hungary sign Sziget

After the adventures in Bulgaria, I hopped on a flight to Budapest to visit more family (close cousins on my mom’s side). A few days in advance, my cousin had mentioned something about a music festival, but I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Well, what a pleasant surprise. My family had bought me a ticket to one of the biggest music festivals in all of Europe, called Sziget, with attendance of 1/2 a million people from 100 countries. Although the festival takes place on the remote island of Sziget, Budapest locals still complain from the non-stop noise pollution caused by this week long blast of music. This year marked the 25th year anniversary of the festival, so musicians like Alt-J, Breaking Benjamin, George Ezra, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Chainsmokers, The Naked & Famous, Whiz Khalifa, and Major Lazer were all there.

The atmosphere reminded me a bit of my adventures in Oktoberfest a few years ago – essentially a lot of young people drinking, passing out on the ground, camping out wherever, and performing unspeakable acts with strangers…

All in all, it was a great night. I got to spend some quality time with my 15-year old cousin, who I haven’t seen in 11 years, enjoyed some incredible shows, and simply smiled at the fact that it was just a normal Monday, and I happened to coincidentally stumble upon this awesome festival. And although I missed a lot of the big names, I’m actually pretty happy I didn’t have the week-long pass, because I’m sure I’d be dead after spending seven days on that alcohol-infused, God-forsaken island. That used to fly when I was twenty… but recovery’s just not the same anymore when you’re 28. 😉

Awesome experience! Read more about additional Budapest adventures here.
